For Kids: Checking Your Airways

A peak flow meter tells you how open your airways are. It also warns you when a flare up is on the way. Use your meter as often as you are told. Follow the steps below. You will need paper, a pencil, and your record sheet.

Step 1

  • Move the marker to the lowest number on the scale.

  • Stand up straight.

  • Now, take as deep a breath as you can. Hold that breath.

Step 2

  • Put the mouthpiece in your mouth. Close your lips tightly around it.

  • Blow into the meter 1 time as hard and fast as you can.

  • Take the meter out of your mouth.

Step 3

  • Look at the marker. Where is it now?

  • Write down the number the marker points to.

Repeat steps 1, 2, and 3 two more times. Be sure to move the marker back to the lowest number on the scale each time.

Step 4

  • Look at the 3 numbers you wrote down. Write the highest number on your record sheet.

  • Use the number you wrote on your record sheet to find what zone you're in. Follow your action plan for that zone.
