What is Hydrocortisone; pramoxine topical cream, ointment, or lotion?

HYDROCORTISONE; PRAMOXINE (Analpram-HC®, Enzone®, Pramosone®, ProctoCream®-HC, Zone-A®) is used to decrease inflammation, itching and pain of the skin and anal area. This product combines two medicines. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that decreases itching and inflammation. Pramoxine is an anesthetic which causes a loss of feeling in the skin and surrounding tissue. It is most commonly used for minor skin irritations, anal itching or hemorrhoids. Generic hydrocortisone; pramoxine creams, ointments, and lotions are available.

What should my health care professional know before I receive Hydrocortisone; Pramoxine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • chickenpox, herpes or tuberculosis infection

  • diabetes

  • infection near the site of use

  • liver disease

  • skin wasting or thinning

  • an unusual reaction to hydrocortisone, corticosteroids, pramoxine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

How should this medicine be used?

Hydrocortisone; pramoxine is for external use only. Do not take by mouth. Do not apply to your eye. Follow directions on the prescription label. Apply a thin film of cream, ointment or lotion to the affected area. Do not cover with a bandage or dressing unless your prescriber or health care professional tells you to. Wash your hands before and after use. Do not use your medicine more often than directed.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, use only that dose. Do not use double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with Hydrocortisone; Pramoxine?

There are no known interactions between hydrocortisone; pramoxine cream, ointment or lotion with other medicines; however, check with your health care professional before applying other topical products at the same time to the treated area.

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while using Hydrocortisone; Pramoxine?

Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your symptoms do not improve after one week of hydrocortisone; pramoxine use. It is important not to use more hydrocortisone; pramoxine than prescribed. Do not use for more than 14 days unless directed by your prescriber or health care professional. Do not use on healthy skin or over large areas of skin. Tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are exposed to anyone with measles or chickenpox, or if you develop sores or blisters that do not heal properly.

Do not use an airtight bandage to cover the affected area unless your prescriber or health care professional tells you to. If you are to cover the area, follow the prescriber's instructions carefully. Covering the area where hydrocortisone; pramoxine is applied can increase the amount that passes through the skin and may increase the risk of side effects.

Do not get hydrocortisone; pramoxine in your eyes. If you do, rinse out with plenty of cool tap water.

What side effects may I notice from receiving Hydrocortisone; Pramoxine?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • dark red spots or bumps on the skin

  • lack of healing of skin

  • skin infection

  • skin irritation

  • thinning of the skin

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • burning sensation

  • dryness

  • itching

  • temporary stinging

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature between 15° and 30° C (59° and 86° F); do not freeze. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

What is Hydrocortisone; Pramoxine Rectal Aerosol Foam?

HYDROCORTISONE; PRAMOXINE (ProctoFoam®-HC) is used to relieve inflammation, itching and pain of the anorectal area. This product combines two medicines. Hydrocortisone is a corticosteroid that decreases itching and inflammation. Pramoxine is an anesthetic which causes a loss of feeling in the skin and surrounding tissue. This medicine is most commonly used for anal itching or hemorrhoids, but may be used for other inflammatory conditions of the anorectal area. Generic hydrocortisone; pramoxine rectal aerosol foam is not available.

What should my health care professional know before I take Hydrocortisone; Pramoxine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • chickenpox, herpes or tuberculosis infection

  • diabetes

  • infection near the site of use

  • intestinal or rectal infection, tears, obstruction, or perforation

  • liver disease

  • skin wasting or thinning

  • an unusual reaction to hydrocortisone, corticosteroids, pramoxine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

How should this medicine be used?

Hydrocortisone; pramoxine rectal aerosol foam is for rectal and topical use. Do not take by mouth. Do not apply to your eye. Follow directions on the prescription label. Gently cleanse the affected area prior to use. This medication is usually applied 3—4 times per day, or as directed by your health care professional. Use the applicator supplied with the medication for anal use. This foam can also be applied topically to the perianal area; place foam onto a cleansing tissue or pad and gently rub into the affected area. Fingers or any other mechanical device should not be used to administer the aerosol foam. Do not use your medication more often than directed.

How to fill and use the applicator (see product instructions also):

  • Place cap on top of container . Shake well for 5—10 seconds before each use. Do not remove container cap during use.

  • Hold container upright and gently place the tip of the applicator onto the nose of the container cap.

  • Pull applicator plunger past the fill line on the applicator barrel.

  • Hold the container and applicator at eye level. Place your index and middle fingers on the arms of the container cap and the thumb beneath container. Support the applicator with your other hand. Prime the container by pressing down firmly on the arms of the cap and then release. It usually requires 1—2 pumps for foam to appear. The first time you prime the pump a burst of air may come out of the container.

  • To fill the applicator, press down firmly on cap flanges, hold for 1—2 seconds, and release. Wait 5—10 seconds to allow foam to expand in the applicator. Repeat until the foam reaches the fill line. It may take 3—4 pumps to reach the fill line. Remove the applicator from the container cap.

  • Hold the applicator firmly. Place your index finger over the plunger. Gently insert the tip of the applicator into the anus. Once in place, push plunger to expel foam, then withdraw applicator. Apply to the anus only with the applicator provided with the foam.

  • The applicator parts and container and cap should be pulled apart and rinsed with warm water after each use.

This product is commonly used for itchy, inflamed skin of the perianal and anal areas, including episiotomy pain, anal itching, or hemorrhoids. Generic hydrocortisone; pramoxine topical aerosol foam is not available.

What should my health care professional know before I receive Hydrocortisone; Pramoxine?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • chickenpox, herpes or tuberculosis infection

  • diabetes

  • infection near the site of use

  • liver disease

  • skin wasting or thinning

  • an unusual reaction to hydrocortisone, corticosteroids, pramoxine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

Wash hands thoroughly after each use. Do not use your medicine more often than directed.
