What are ergoloid mesylates sublingual tablets?

ERGOLOID MESYLATES (previously available with the brand name Hydergine®) is one of a group of medicines known as ergot alkaloids. Ergoloid mesylates are used to help to treat memory loss or confusion which can occur with aging, dementia, or Alzheimer's disease. Generic ergoloid mesylates products are available.

What should my health care professional know before I take ergoloid mesylates?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • heart or blood vessel disease

  • liver disease

  • low blood pressure

  • mental disorder

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to ergot alkaloids (such as dihydroergotamine, ergoloid mesylates, or ergotamine), or other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

How should I take this medicine?

Follow the directions on the prescription label. Place the sublingual tablet under your tongue and allow to dissolve completely before swallowing. Do not chew or swallow the tablet whole. Do not eat or drink when the tablet is under your tongue. Take this medicine after meals to avoid upset stomach. Do not take your medicine more often than directed. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice.

This product should not be used in children. This medicine is commonly used in older patients.

What if I miss a dose?

Do not take the missed dose. Take only the next dose according to your normal schedule. Do not take double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with ergoloid mesylates?

Do not use any of the following migraine drugs within 24 hours of this medicine:•almotriptan (Axert™), eletriptan (Relpax®), frovatriptan (Frova®), naratriptan (Amerge®), rizatriptan (Maxalt®), sumatriptan (Imitrex®), or zolmitriptan (Zomig®).

Do not use any of the following medicines with ergoloid mesylates:

  • bromocriptine (Ergoset®, Parlodel®)

  • cabergoline (Dostinex®)

  • ergonovine (Ergotrate®)

  • methylergonovine (Methergine®)

  • some medicines used to treat migraine such as caffeine-ergotamine (example: Cafergot® or Wigraine®), dihydroergotamine (DHE® or Migranal®), ergotamine (example: Ergomar®), or methysergide (Sansert®).

  • some medications used to treat AIDS or HIV infection such as efavirenz (Sustiva™), delavirdine (Rescriptor®), indinavir (Crixivan®), lopinavir; ritonavir (Kaletra™), nelfinavir (Viracept™), ritonavir (Norvir®), or saquinavir (Fortovase®, Invirase®).

Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including nonprescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.

What should I watch for while taking ergoloid mesylates?

Visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress.

Ergoloid mesylates may cause sudden dizziness or lightheadedness if you try to stand up too quickly. Make sure to get up slowly from a lying or sitting position while taking ergoloid mesylates.

You may get drowsy or dizzy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how this medicine affects you. Alcohol can make you more drowsy and dizzy. Avoid alcoholic drinks.

If you are going to have surgery tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking ergoloid mesylates.

What side effects may I notice from taking ergoloid mesylates?

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

  • abdominal pain or cramping

  • blurred vision or change in vision

  • decrease in the amount of urine passed

  • dizziness or fainting spells

  • slow or fast heartbeat

  • vomiting

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • irritation of the skin under the tongue

  • loss of appetite

  • mild headache

  • nausea, upset stomach, or mild vomiting

  • skin flushing or rash (mild)

  • stuffy nose (nasal congestion)

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Protect from heat, light, and moisture. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
