What are simethicone capsules, tablets or chewable tablets?

SIMETHICONE(Gas-X®, Phazyme®-125, Mylanta® Gas Relief and others) is an antiflatulent used to treat too much gas in the stomach and intestines. Swallowing too much air or eating foods that disagree often causes gas. Generic simethicone capsules, tablets and chewable tablets are available.

What should my health care professional know before I take simethicone?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • phenylketonuria

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to simethicone, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

How should I take this medicine?

Take simethicone capsules, tablets and chewable tablets by mouth. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. If you are prescribed chewable tablets, crush or chew them; do not swallow them whole. The capsules (also known as softgels) should be swallowed whole with water; do not chew them. Follow the directions on the label. If your health care provider has given you special instructions, follow these directions instead of what is on the label. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.

Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. Do not administer adult simethicone preparations to infants.

What if I miss a dose?

If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

What drug(s) may interact with simethicone?

Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. What should I watch for while taking simethicone?

In general, simethicone is a very safe drug. Tell your health care prescriber if your symptoms get worse, or if you have severe pain, diarrhea, constipation, or blood in your stool.

What side effects may I notice from taking simethicone?

There are no reported side effects with simethicone.

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.

What are simethicone oral drops?

What should my health care professional know before I take simethicone?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to simethicone, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

How should I take this medicine?

For infants, the dosage can be mixed with one ounce of cool water, infant formula or other suitable liquids to ease administration. Follow the directions on the label. What is simethicone coated cellulose oral suspension?

SIMETHICONECOATED CELLULOSE SUSPENSION (SonoRx®) is an agent used before an ultrasound examination. It helps pictures of your upper stomach appear more clearly on the ultrasound. It is not used for the routine relief of gas. Generic simethicone coated cellulose suspension is not available.

What should my health care professional know before I take simethicone coated cellulose suspension?

They need to know if you have any of these conditions:

  • blockage or tear in your intestine or esophagus

  • gastroesophageal reflux disease (also known as GERD)

  • hiatal hernia

  • on a fluid-restricted diet

  • recent nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and/or stomach pain

  • an unusual or allergic reaction to simethicone or simethicone coated cellulose suspension, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives

  • pregnant or trying to get pregnant

  • breast-feeding

How should I take this medicine?

Take simethicone coated cellulose suspension by mouth. Do not eat or drink anything for at least 4 hours before your ultrasound examination; follow your prescribers instructions. You will probably take this medicine at the clinic before your exam. You need to drink all of the medicine (about 1 pint) over a 15 minute period. Tell your health care provider if you cannot finish all of the medicine.

  • diarrhea

  • abdominal pain

Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):

  • orange-colored stool (orange color usually disappears after 48 hours).

Where can I keep my medicine?

Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.

Store at room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C (68 and 77 degrees F). Do not freeze. Keep container tightly closed. Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
