What is dinoprostone cervical gel?
DINOPROSTONE, PROSTAGLANDIN E2 (Prepidil®) stimulates uterine muscle. It ripens or prepares the cervix for labor induction, in pregnant women who are at or near to term. Generic dinoprostone cervical gel is not yet available.
What should my health care professional know before I use dinoprostone?
They need to know if you have any of the following conditions:

anemia
-
asthma
-
cesarean section or other uterine surgery
-
diabetes
-
heart, liver, lung, or kidney disease
-
high or low blood pressure
-
placenta previa
-
seizure disorder (convulsions)
-
vaginal bleeding, inflammation or infection
-
6 or more previous pregnancies producing live birth
-
an unusual or allergic reaction to dinoprostone, prostaglandins, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
How should I use this medicine?
Prostaglandin cervical gel is inserted high in the vagina, using a syringe, by a health-care professional in a hospital or clinic setting. After administration remain lying down for 15 to 30 minutes. If the initial treatment is ineffective another dose can be given in 6 hours. If the treatment is effective it is followed in 6 to 12 hours by injection of oxytocin to promote delivery.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

What drug(s) may interact with dinoprostone?
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What should I watch for while taking dinoprostone?
Your condition will be closely monitored while you use dinoprostone.
Dinoprostone can make other muscles outside the uterus contract and cause side effects. Most of these effects will go away quickly. Contact your prescriber or health care professional at once if you get an unpleasant vaginal discharge, continued fever, chills and shivering, or increase in vaginal bleeding several days after treatment.
What side effects may I notice from using dinoprostone?
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:

chest pain or tightness in the chest
-
continuous or excessive vaginal bleeding
-
fast or irregular heartbeat (palpitations)
-
lightheadedness or fainting spells
-
pale, cool, blotchy skin
-
pelvic area pain
-
skin rash or itching (hives)
-
stomach pain, or severe cramping pains
-
unusual swelling of the face, nose, or eyelids
-
wheezing or difficulty breathing
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
-
diarrhea
-
dizziness
-
fever
-
flushing of the skin
-
headache
-
nausea, vomiting
Where can I keep my medicine?
Keep out of the reach of children.
Store in a refrigerator between 2 and 8 degrees C (36 and 46 degrees F). Throw away after 24 months.

How should I use this medicine?
Prostaglandin vaginal insert is inserted high in the vagina by a health-care professional in a hospital or clinic setting. Remove the foil wrapping before use. After insertion you must remain lying down for 2 hours. The insert remains in place for 12 hours, but you can walk about after the first 2 hours. The vaginal insert is easily removed by the retrieval string. An injection of oxytocin is given 30 minutes later to promote delivery.

Store in a freezer below —20 degrees C (—4 degrees F). There is no need for warming before use. After use throw the insert away. Vaginal inserts can be kept in a freezer for a period of three years.

What are dinoprostone vaginal suppositories?
DINOPROSTONE, PROSTAGLANDIN E2 (Prostin E2®) stimulates contractions to empty the uterus after an incomplete abortion or miscarriage, or when fetal death occurs. Dinoprostone is used when necessary to induce abortion between the 12th and 20th week of pregnancy, as calculated from the first day of the last normal menstrual period. Dinoprostone is also used for a condition called hydatidiform mole. Generic dinoprostone vaginal suppositories are not yet available.
What should my health care professional know before I use dinoprostone?

How should I use this medicine?
A dinoprostone vaginal suppository is inserted high in the vagina by a health-care professional in a hospital or clinic setting. Remove the foil wrapping before use. After insertion of the suppository remain lying down for ten minutes. Further doses can be used at intervals of 3 to 5 hours, until the prostaglandin is effective. Prostaglandin should not be used for more than 2 days.
