Betaine oral powder for solution
What is Betaine oral powder for solution?
BETAINE (Cystadane®) is a nutrient used for the treatment of homocystinuria. This drug helps regulate homocysteine levels. Lower homocysteine levels can improve how you feel. Betaine is not a cure. Generic betaine is not available.
What should my health care professional know before I receive Betaine?
They need to know if you have any of these conditions:
-
an unusual reaction to Betaine, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
-
pregnant or trying to get pregnant
-
breast-feeding
How should this medicine be used?
Betaine is taken by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Shake the bottle of powder lightly before removing the cap. Using the scoop that comes with the bottle, measure the number of scoops prescribed for the dose. Then, mix the dose with 4—6 ounces (120—180 ml) of water, juice, milk, or formula until completely dissolved, or mix the dose with food. Take the dose immediately.
Contact your pediatrician regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed. Betaine has been used in very young infants and children. Compared to adults, children or infants may require more frequent changes in dose to get the right effect.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
What drug(s) may interact with Betaine?
No drug interactions are known. Vitamins such as folate, pyridoxine (B-6), and cyanocobalamin (B-12) are usually given along with betaine.
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What should I watch for while taking Betaine?
Visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. Blood tests will be drawn regularly to check the level of homocysteine.
